In Search of Meaning
For the past 14 years I've been starting, operating and leading businesses. Prior to that being deeply immersed in corporate America (Chevrolet and EDS) as a worker bee built a great sensibility in me on how to treat employees and customers. Co-founding (with my husband, Kevin) an IT and Business Alignment Consultancy (Distributed Computing Consultants, Inc. - DCCI) was a joyous and profound learning experience. A bit cliché perhaps, but "No pain; no gain!" comes to mind as I think of how I became who I am today. I think of the lessons we profoundly learned while building, running, redesigning, hiring, downsizing, restructuring, creating, and delivering around DCCI.
When we began to see a pattern in the joy and peace in our lives that we experienced when working with individuals and the pain and suffering we experienced when trying to make a difference in large political corporations, we chose to reconstitute and have found meaning in our work as small business advisors.
I love the entrepreneurial personality and see that my educational background has enabled me to be an incredibly effective advisor to people who run their own businesses:
- Liberal Arts Degree (1987)
- Business Professional Course (Ajinet- 2000)
- Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Power (Ajinet - 2002)
- Biology of Cognition and Belief (self study 10 years)
- Institute for Independent Business Certification (2007)
In addition to my educational background, my experience has earned me a seat next to business owners as an advisor.
- Hiring many people (designing a very effective recruiting process)
- The pain of learning how to let an employee go quickly and effectively for both of parties (seeing the early warning signs and being clear on the opportunity costs).
- Figuring out cash flow and financial statements (huge sucking sound when in high growth and knowing where you stand at all times).
- Constituting benefits programs (just how much do you give and what do you get in return)
- Creating communications loops (learning how to accept and make commitments)
- Working intensely with mentors and coaches (continually looking for expert help)
For now I've found another fabulous career that I think will serve me for many years. The search for meaning continues through my work to help people get what they want and need from their businesses and help to create jobs for others.
